Each year, Silver Oak's fifth graders spend one week at this outdoor science school, located in the Cupertino Foothills. During their stay, they learn about the forest, meadow, and stream communities through the use of games and other activities. Over the past three years Silver Oak Elementary has been working on supporting students by developing specific Habits of the Mind. Learning these 16 habits will help them become better problem solvers, and to effectively operate in society and promote strategic reasoning, insightfulness, perseverance, creativity and craftsmanship. The idea behind our work is to provide our students with the skills to work through real life situations that equip them to respond using awareness, thought, and intentional strategy in order to gain a positive outcome.

Parents I wanted to let you know that our STEAM Lab will be up and running starting September 9th. This was done with the support of our parent community through your donations to the school along with support from the Evergreen School District. Our STEAM Lab will be once again run by Mrs. Veronica Gardener, who has been leading our STEAM program over the last three years. Mrs. Gardener has worked exceptionally well with our teachers to bring to life the Next Generation Science Standards. Teachers teach lessons about a specific standards in their classrooms and Mrs. Gardener designs and leads hands on problem solving lessons that foster an environment of critical thinking, collaboration, communication and innovation with our students. Mrs. Gardener also incorporates robotics, coding, and engineering into lessons in the lab providing 21st century learning experiences.

Thank you to all students and families for participating in the Box Tops For Education program last year. Thanks also to our teachers who drummed up support and encouraged kids to get their families to earn money for Silver Oak simply while doing everyday shopping. Together we raised over $800 for our school. This year we need a volunteer to lead the program. Please contact Principal Howard Greenfield if you are interested or have any questions.
